What will the future hold for our libraries?

Shropshire Council's cabinet met today and agreed that future decisions over the fate of our libraries would be made by a single cabinet member, in decision making sessions that are closed to the public.

Shropshire Council is redesigning Library services, and a paper brought to cabinet outlined the approach that will be taken, including consultation with the public and commissioning of services to third party enterprises. Opposition to the proposals was voiced by Mr Green of 'Shropshire Libraries YES Campaign'. Representatives from Ellesmere and Shawbury library supporters also brought questions to the meeting, highlighting concerns over the Council's proposals and a lack of engagement with local communities.

Councillor Hannah Fraser said 'I am greatly concerned that this paper does not rule out closure of libraries, in fact it states that library closure may need to be considered. In addition, today's cabinet decision means that the Portfolio holder can take a decision to close a library in a closed session that no member of the public is allowed to attend. People are right to be concerned about these measures, and I will be urging Shropshire Council to put these proposals through a robust scrutiny process'.
